Help Yourself Before Helping Others

At times, I am amazed to see some traditional PR agencies in India claiming that they understand marketing communications or for that matter ‘content’. At some point in recent history, I was associated with one of India’s leading PR consultancies, which had a website loaded with errors and oversights. Similarly, another 10 year-old PR agency sent me a piece of marketing collateral which did not even have the presentation basics in place.

Sent in a PDF format, the presentation was a classic lesson on “Mistakes you should avoid in a PowerPoint presentation”. Most slides carried a distinct identity. The fonts were different and so were the bullets. The layout, too, was a casualty. It went by the quantity of the text matter.

More importantly, the content of the presentation seemed to be confused compilation of several isolated thoughts; some of them making their way straight from the worldwide web.

But what caught my attention and the reason to write this piece was the end of it all. Despite the awkward variance and convoluted messaging, the bright agency had the audacity to ask you for your business. Not to miss their final assertion – “we have the experience”.

Finally...

Phew! So we finally got started.
